The Sound Driver: How it Works

The sound hardware is the device that processes audio signals and modifies that signal so that it is produced properly by speaker systems. Typically, sound devices primarily serve to convert digital audio signals into analog audio signals, but they can also serve non-converted digital audio signals, mono sound, or even full surround sound stereo. The sound device that your computer is equipped will differ depending on the make and model of the machine. Most retail computers are outfitted with a low to mid range quality sound card that doesn't support more than 5.1 stereo systems. Other high-end models support 7.1 surround sound stereo and can be extremely powerful.

The demand for more realistic and powerful sound has risen remarkably over the past several years. Computers are now commonly hooked up to state-of-the-art stereo systems that can deliver a wall shaking range of decibels in crystal clear waves. As these demands for sound quality and power increase, the hardware must evolve and so must the drivers evolve with them.

The sound driver is a small piece of software that contains the instructions for processing the audio and sound signals. The sound device does not know how to process these signals without the sound driver nor does it even know how to communicate with other hardware devices or the operating system. Drivers are just as important to the production of sound and audio as the hardware device itself. Development of sound drivers for existing devices, continues long after the initial release of the hardware device so that improvements to the quality of it's results can be made.

Developers face many challenges when improving drivers. There are many rules and security policies in Windows that the driver must comply with in order to function. The biggest challenge is to make real and noticeable improvements to the quality, speed and performance of the sound device without sacrificing compatibility, compliance or stability.

Drivers are improved consistently over time as bugs or general improvements to the hardware are discovered. You don't have to replace your hardware to get the update, you simply need to update the driver. The manufacturer of the sound device distributes these updates freely in small packages called driver updates. They can be obtained from the manufacturers website but they must be manually extracted and installed. This method requires above average knowledge of file formats, file extraction, manual installation procedures and registration commands.

Many users are uncomfortable with performing tasks such as these and often do not have anyone or any resource that can complete the job for them. Therefore, the issue worsens as the old driver becomes more and more out-of-date. The old driver effects the stability of the computer and is not delivering the same amount of speed and performance that updating to the most current driver would. Updating to the most current driver for a sound device will improve the sound quality of the device by making improvements to the clarity, volume handling and signal processing.

Common Problems with Sound Drivers

Sound hardware can be quite susceptible to damage as it is not uncommon for a sound component to be run for hours at a time and at extremely powerful ranges of volume. Like any other component of a computer, they are not immune to the effects of hard disk errors and processing errors. Drivers can be become non-functional in a variety of different ways.

Common Causes of Failure...

  • The sound driver is out-of-date

  • The sound driver is missing or corrupt

  • An update to the driver failed or was not completed correctly

  • The sound device is damaged

Although a sound device does take quite a beating, they are pretty durable components. If you're having an issue producing sound from your computer, it is likely a driver issue and a simple uninstallation and reinstallation of the driver will solve the problem. We have compiled a guide to manually fixing Sound Drivers, however, you must be certain that you are getting the correct driver for the correct device.

Locating a driver means knowing all the required information about the device and the operating system. Then, the user must navigate through an entire website to find a single file, download it and then manually install the new driver. Some drivers come with installers that will walk the user through the process, yet there are still a great deal of users who feel intimidated by these driver software installers.

How to Easily Download the Correct Sound Driver
